Characterizing Canada's

Refugee Healthcare System

Objective: to understand and characterize the existing care models used by primary care facilities, public health offices, and resettlement agencies that provide specialized care to refugees or refugee claimants in the primary care setting during the "Syrian Refugee Initiative" (November 2015 to January 2017) and presently. We aim to characterize the existing structures and care processes, as well as the readiness of Canada's refugee and refugee claimant health system.


The outcomes of this study will provide a foundation for comparative work on refugee healthcare models and will inform providers to improve the quality, efficiency, and coordination of care for newly arrived refugees and refugee claimants.

Data Holdings

Since 2014, we have been working to create a granular and comprehensive refugee health research data repository, linking multiple health data sources. Our refugee health data holdings include clinical data from 2012 onward and are updated regularly:

 

  • Primary Care Electronic Medical Records (EMR) 
  • Sociodemographic Information
  • Biometric Data (Ht/Wt, BMI, BP)
  • Laboratory Investigations
  • Clinic, Emergency Dept., & Hospital Utilisation
  • Patient/Provider Interviews and Focus Groups
